WHAT IS MEANT BY INFRARED RADIATION?

PRINCIPLES OF HEAT

There are three principles (or a combination of them) for transferring heat to an object:
- Conduction:
The transfer of heat by direct contact between the heat source and the object to be heated
- Convection:
The transfer of heat by a flow of liquid or gas previously heated by the heat source
- Radiation:
The transfer of heat by radiation emitted by an object brought to a temperature that is higher than that of its surroundings; in this way the surrounding objects absorb the radiation (see example).

Example: the sun or infrared lamps.

Just as the sun’s thermal rays directly heat the earth, people and objects, so infrared lamps emit energy that is absorbed safely and immediately by cold surfaces.

THE HEATING SPECTRUM

The infrared part of the colour spectrum produces heat.
Infrared sources (heat sources) radiate their energy in one or more wavelengths. The spectral power distribution depends on the temperature and on the emissive properties of the radiating element; infrared rays can all have the same power output but have very different spectral distribution properties from one another.
The infrared band is subdivided into IR-A, IR-B and IR-C.

IR- A short wave: 800 - 1400 nm

IR- B medium wave: 1400 - 3000 nm

IR- C long wave: 3000 - 10 000 nm

WHY DID WE DECIDE TO MAKE USE OF SHORT WAVE RADIATION?

BENEFITS OF SHORT WAVE INFRARED RADIATION LAMPS COMPARED WITH OTHER RADIATING ELEMENTS

- Efficiency:
92% of the energy consumed is transformed into infrared radiation and hence into heat (table1)
- Ability to direct the radiation: As with light, it is not affected by air currents, there is no loss of energy, and the heat is applied where it is needed.
- Versatility: The power input can be adjusted between 0% and 100% without any effect on lifespan.
- Cleanliness and safety: No noise, dust or smoke.
- Compactness: Optimal power density

IR A - short wave (SW)
IR B - medium wave (MW)
IR C - long wave (LW)

WHY SHORT WAVE?

Basically, the shorter the wave, the more easily it travels through the air. Short wave infrared rays produce heat by heating the body hit by the ray, without heating the surrounding air. A good example of this action is the effect created when you move from the shade into the sun: although the temperature is the same, the temperature in the sun is felt to be higher. This phenomenon makes sunbathing possible during winter holidays, when temperatures are much lower.
On the other hand, long wave infrared rays do not have the same effect, they heat the surrounding air and thus it takes longer to experience the feeling of heat.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

- Immediate heat: 90% of the heat is available within 1 second;
- Efficiency: 92% efficiency in emission of rays. Over 85% of the energy is converted to heat;
- Convenience: no pre-heating and no heat dispersion;
- Precision: the heat can be directed where required with reflectors, like light;
- Versatility: it is possible to heat just part of the surroundings, either inside or outside;
- Individuality: intensity adjustable from 0 – 100%;
- Reliability: lamps last up to 7000 hours even when switched on and off frequently.

DESIGNING AN INFRARED HEATING SYSTEM

The design of an infrared heating system must take account of:
- THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE HEAT SOURCE
- THE PROPERTIES OF THE OBJECT TO BE HEATED
- THE FEATURES OF THE APPLICATION
The design can only be carried out if all this information is known. Questions such as: “how many lamps must be installed to heat an environment to x C°?” have no answer. The temperature curve of every type of object to be heated needs to be determined, taking into account its specific properties. In most cases, this needs to be done by practical trials. For example: the possibility needs to be considered that different parts of an object behave differently when exposed to infrared radiation. One example is the heating of different coloured fabrics (different colours absorb heat in different ways). The installations described here all have individual requirements. MO-EL products are only installed in compliance with local laws, codes and standards.

INFRARED: AREAS OF APPLICATION

ROOM HEATING (PROFESSIONAL AND DOMESTIC)
- Bars, restaurants
- Terraces
- Delivery areas
- Animal houses
- Hangars
- Warehouses
- Churches
- Sports stadiums
- Engineering sector
- Loading and unloading areas
- Covered galleries
- Mosques
- Hotel rooms

MAIN COMPONENTS OF AN INFRARED HEATER

Room heating equipment consists mainly of a reflector (usually parabolic) and one or more infrared lamps.

In this application, halogen lamps provide:

- heat only where and when needed
- visible and instantaneous response,
- low energy usage,
- safety and cleanliness, with no smoke.

INFRARED RADIATION HEATING SYSTEMS

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Infrared rays striking surfaces (e.g. bodies, walls, pavements) raise the temperature of these surfaces. The heat is simultaneous with the switching on of the heating unit. This is the case for both domestic and industrial use.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID HEAT LOSS?

Yes. The lamp is surmounted along its entire length by a parabolic reflective panel which directs the IR rays and sends them where they are needed. In this way dispersion of all warming rays is avoided.

WHY CHOOSE AN IP56 SYSTEM?

All the heaters in this range are almost completely protected against dust and water (IP65 approval for Fiore and Girosole models, IP55 for Sharklite). Using the patented technology, this has been achieved without placing any coverings or glass between the lamp (the source of the IR rays) and the heater surfaces which would reduce output. This feature makes the heaters absolutely safe even in humid or dusty environments, such as outside or in the bathroom.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES COMPARED WITH COMBUSTIBLE FUEL-BASED HEATERS?

They enable you to take advantage of clean heat, without gas emissions that are harmful or polluting or contribute to the greenhouse effect. They are also easy to move, robust and safe.

WHY ARE THEY MAINTENANCE FREE?

The lamps have a life of 5000 hours. Unlike combustible fuel-based heaters, there is no need for refills of inflammable material every so many hours. Also, there is no longer any need to keep stocks of inflammable refills.

WHY IS IT ECONOMICAL?

Consumption tables show that it is economical. The 766 model (1200W), for example, uses € 0.10 of energy every hour, and immediately heats an area of approximately 8 square metres. The 767 model (1800W), on the other hand, heats an area of approximately 10 square metres and uses only € 0.16 of electrical energy per hour.

MODULAR SYSTEM

With accessories that can be bought separately, the Fiore modular system was designed to provide a wide range of combinations to meet many different requirements.

SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS WITHOUT GAS

Works without using any type of gas. Warms immediately, focusing the heat only where it is needed, with lower usage costs than those of other heat sources.

MAXIMUM HEATING POWER

Produced specifically for large spaces requiring immediate heat.

GUARANTEED HEAT YIELD, IN COMPLETE SAFETY

The lack of front glass enables the appliance to reach high efficiency (15% more yield). It has been designed to be completely insulated and impermeable to dust and jets of water (IP56).
